The following are some of the reasons for traveling on a B1 visa:

  • Conducting business, such as contract negotiations or attending business meetings

  • Participating in a conference related to one's profession, education, or current business venture

Reasons for traveling on a B2 visa

The following are some of the reasons for traveling on a B2 visa:

  • Participating in tourist activities or taking a vacation

  • Visiting relatives

  • Getting medical attention

  • Attending or participating in events, such as concerts or classes, as long as no payment or credit is provided to the attendee

  • Participating in a brief recreational study course, such as a cooking class

Activities for traveling on a B2 visa

You are not permitted to travel under this visa to engage in any of the following activities:

  • Study

  • Long-term employment with a US company

  • Paid performances and any professional performance in front of a paying audience.

  • Arrival on a ship or aircraft as a crewmember

  • Work in the foreign press, radio, film, print journalism, or other forms of information media.

  • Permanent residence in the States.
